Crypto Ponzi Hits a Dead End
David Carmona, who ran the IcomTech Ponzi show like a digital magician, just got served with 10 years behind bars. The man had everyone believing he’d cracked the code for endless crypto wealth, but it was all smoke and mirrors. Between 2018 and 2019, he siphoned off $8.4 million from unsuspecting hustlers who thought they were cashing in on next-gen crypto mining and trading. Reality check: their cash went straight into Carmona’s Gucci pockets and Lambo payments.
He made it sound so easy—promising returns that would double every six months. Double. In crypto? You know something’s off. U.S. Attorney Damian Williams dropped the hammer, calling it all “a lie.”
Big Flexes, Zero Blockchain Juice
Carmona didn’t just throw up some website and hope for the best. Nah, he took the Ponzi on the road. His crew would roll up to events like they just stepped out of a metaverse yacht—drippin’ in high-end designer and cruising in exotic cars. They talked like they were whales who just cracked the Satoshi code, when really they were filling their bags with other people’s tokens. Investors? Left holding air.
But things started to fall apart when people tried to cash out their “profits.” What they saw in their wallets wasn’t what they could actually pull out. Withdrawal issues? Delays. Excuses. And when you could finally withdraw something, hidden fees ate the rest of your sats.
The Rugged Icoms Token Gambit
Right before the Ponzi finally imploded, IcomTech made one last desperate play—the Icoms token. They hyped it like the next Bitcoin, claiming it would soon be accepted by real businesses for real payments. Spoiler: no one took it. The Icoms token was basically a digital paperweight. More losses stacked up, as the whole thing went belly up in 2019.
Carmona wasn’t just thrown under the bus solo. Former IcomTech CEO Marco Ruiz Ochoa got five years earlier this year, and the rest of the Ponzi squad, David Brend and Gustavo Rodriguez, were taken down too. Carmona himself pled guilty to wire fraud in December 2023, sealing his fate for the next decade.
