Web3 gaming takes a twist, as Moonray shifts to mainstream consoles
Moonray, the Ethereum-based arena brawler, just announced its grand leap onto PlayStation 5 next year. But—plot twist—Sony’s no-fun policies mean the game will land without its signature Web3 features on this console. Console gamers can expect an action-packed, free-to-play battle royale, but no crypto integrations at launch.
On PC, Moonray has already captured attention with its play-to-airdrop scheme through the Epic Games Store. Gamers took on challenges, pocketing MNRY tokens before they even officially launched. NFT holders got bonus rewards too, pushing engagement to the next level. But this ecosystem won’t mirror itself on PlayStation—for now.
Moonray’s spokesperson didn’t sugarcoat it. They told Decrypt: “We make sure to comply with the rules and conditions put forth by each platform we are working with. These rules differ between them, especially when it comes to Web3 elements.” So, Sony’s crypto-cautious stance means that PS5 users won’t see any blockchain twists just yet.
Epic Games Store and mobile keep the Web3 spirit alive
PC gamers playing on the Epic Games Store will continue to enjoy Moonray’s juicy token rewards and NFT perks. The project plans to drop its mobile auto-battler version next year with the same setup, keeping its diehard crypto fans busy. In contrast, Sony’s version might feel a little stripped-down compared to the blockchain-packed PC and mobile releases.
Moonray’s journey began on Stacks, a Bitcoin Layer-2, as a metaverse RPG. But the project pivoted hard, dropping into Ethereum’s battlefield and turning into a multiplayer showdown set in a dystopian “post-human” world. Players gear up with swords, weapons, and powers to crush their opponents in various game modes. On the PS5, this world will still unfold in all its intensity—just without the digital asset ecosystem it originally promised.
A Moonray spokesperson highlighted the importance of console gaming in Web3’s future, stating, “For Web3 to reach broad adoption, there really has to be a serious conversation about where you find your users. For gaming, consoles are incredibly important platforms to reach a broad gaming audience.”
PS5 crypto gaming mystery deepens with Off the Grid
It’s not just Moonray. Last week, Off the Grid—an Avalanche-based battle royale—made waves with its console launch on PS5, Xbox, and PC. The hype was real, viral moments surged, and the PC version hit the top free-to-play spot on Epic Games Store. Yet, despite all the buzz, crypto integration hasn’t materialized. The studio behind Off the Grid, Gunzilla Games, remains hush-hush about how their NFT and token systems will eventually plug into these consoles.
As Moonray inches closer to its PS5 debut, questions linger about how Web3 will merge with the mainstream gaming world. No date’s been pinned down for Moonray’s console debut, but testing is set to kick off in the back half of 2025. Whether that testing stays behind closed doors or goes public remains an open question.
