Worldcoin, now simply known as World, just dropped a major move. The Sam Altman co-founded project, with its eyeball-scanning wizardry, launched its Ethereum Layer-2 called World Chain on Thursday. This isn’t your everyday blockchain, though—it’s designed to onboard humans, and not just trading bots, to the decentralized world.
World Chain’s mission? Verifiable humans, not algorithms, running the show. Its creators want to push financial freedom and identity tools to the people who need them most. According to the World team, bots have dominated too many chains for too long. Liam Horne, one of World’s advisors, told Decrypt, “On a lot of chains, there’s more algorithmic trading bots moving money around than people. World Chain is about expanding use cases for humans and building a blockchain designed for them.”
World Chain Joins Optimism’s Superchain for Speed and Interoperability
World Chain isn’t a lone wolf in the crypto jungle. It’s linked up with Optimism’s Superchain, a layer-2 collective of interoperable chains sharing security and infrastructure. The Superchain setup allows World Chain to mesh with over two dozen chains like Base and Blast. This connectivity promises to draw users from across the vast crypto ecosystem. Fast transactions, low fees, and gas subsidies sweeten the deal for verified human users. So, the human-first vision isn’t just fluff—it’s built into the economics.
What makes World Chain stand out is its use of Optimism’s OP Stack. With the stack, the platform invites developers to create dApps that actually do something meaningful for everyday humans. Ryan Wyatt, Chief Growth Officer of Optimism Unlimited, highlighted how collective engineering efforts are driving OP Stack’s development forward. He noted, “The best protocol engineers across teams like Worldcoin, Base, and Uniswap are advancing OP Stack, benefiting World Chain and the broader ecosystem.”
Orb-Powered Identity and Global Financial Access
World is no stranger to making waves. Since 2019, it’s been pushing its Orb, an iris-scanning device that links human identity to blockchain keys. Now, World Chain integrates World ID for verified users, giving them perks like prioritized blockspace. But it doesn’t stop there. This Layer-2 network will also offer on and off-ramps in over 150 countries, alongside several stablecoin markets.
Horne pointed out how these services cater to regions where people are left out of traditional financial systems. He explained, “People who need access to stablecoins, those hedging against local currency inflation, will use Worldcoin. These are the people that need crypto.”
World Chain’s grand experiment now begins, one verified human at a time.
